STEPS / Life Launch
Seven out of every ten young adults with developmental disabilities living in South Florida are not able to secure a job. There are many contributing factors to this alarmingly high unemployment rate, but the bottom line is this: The majority of these young men and women have the potential to become productive, valuable members of the workforce.
Since 2008, the Foundation has operated Summer STEPS in collaboration with funding from the Children’s Services Council of Broward County. Since its inception, this ground-breaking program has given over 200 teenagers and young adults with developmental disabilities experience in a supported work environment, learning communication, social, and teamwork skills. Interns work 30 hours per week for eight weeks of the summer and earn a paycheck for their efforts. At present, 98% of the interns completed the program and some continued onto part- or full-time jobs. Furthermore, they all gain tremendous self esteem and confidence, as well as the respect of their coworkers and employers.
In an effort to enable these young adults with developmental disabilities to continue their employment experience throughout the year, the Foundation introduced Life Launch. Life Launch is based on the belief that most potential employers are open to the idea of employing people with disabilities but do not have the necessary information or training to make it happen. It also is grounded in the reality that most young adults with disabilities need extra supports, although generally minimal, to fully integrate and thrive as a member of the private sector. Research shows that when barriers are removed, young people with disabilities can thrive in a corporate environment. This program will enable our interns to continue their employment experience throughout the year. The goal is to provide them with jobs and supply the necessary supports and guidance to retain employment, enabling them to gain their independence. Companies that participate in Life Launch will receive extensive training and an onsite job coach as needed until the ultimate goal of independence is achieved. Well-trained job coaches will instruct company staff on disabilities and will offer guidance and ongoing support until the employee is completely up to speed.
