Dan Marino: A Game-Changer for Children with Autism

By Rebecca Astorga

Dan Marino is a champion in more ways than one. Sure, he broke many NFL records as a quarterback for the Miami Dolphins. But his biggest accomplishment to date, second to being a husband and father of six, is being co-founder of The Dan Marino Foundation. The foundation aims at encouraging independence for children and young adults living with autism and disabilities. It also offers volunteering opportunities to individuals who want to help bring awareness to the cause. I had the chance to catch up with one of America's favorite athletes at the Grand Opening of Canali in the Bal Harbour Shops. We discussed his inspiration behind the foundation and where it's headed, as well as ways you can join its team (no football experience needed, of course!).

"Thank you" to the Able Trust!
The Able Trust has awarded a grant for $50,000 to The Dan Marino Foundation in support of "The Able Trust Career Launch Program." Most young adults with disabilities are not given the chance to prove their value in the workplace. Upon earning their high school degree or certificate, seven out of ten young adults with disabilities will remain at home into their 30s and beyond, unable to find employment and maintain a high quality of life.
Support from The Able Trust is critical in bridging this expanding gap in services for these young adults by funding innovative vocational experiences that, in turn, will enable them to gain valuable employment, life, and social skills. The Able Trust's and The Dan Marino Foundation's visions go beyond employment training by providing a model built upon the principles of dignity, education, enrichment, and independence that will serve as a national prototype for excellence.
