Kids at Home

Every year, thousands of America’s foster teens will age out of care on the day of their 18th birthday – most with nowhere to go and no one to turn to. Without ongoing support, these teens face bleak futures:

  • 40% experience homelessness the first year out of care
  • Fewer than half graduate from high school
  • 75% are unemployed or underemployed
  • 2/3 of young women have a child before they turn 21

In October, 2009, the Foundation welcomed Kids@Home into its array of programming.   Seeing that many of the practices that help our young adults with disabilities transition into adulthood are mirrored by the programming offered young adults aging out of foster care, the Foundation felt that this was a perfect partnership.

This program, funded by the Children’s Services Council of Broward County, provides independent living and self-sufficiency training for young people who have aged out of foster care. The award-winning program provides life coaches to help transitioning foster teens secure housing, further their education, gain employment and learn vital life skills.
